I was scrolling through Reddit when I came across a thread, where a guy recently quit gambling and was ecstatic to have saved $500 doing this. I mean it’s a not a big amount. But, definitely much better than binning it on the slot machines or blackjack tables. In fact this is just the start for him.

Just try not to be this guy, who lost $10k and now wants to make it back by risking $50k. Gambling addicts tend to chase losses.

Here’s what he said:

I know it’s not a lot but before I would spend all my wages on slots each month which was getting me no where but this month I haven’t played slots once and saved 500 which I’ve pretty much never done before, it’s been so hard I’ve had lots of urges but I’ve finally quit and I’m happy that I’ve got out of that cycle!

It may not seem much to him. But, if he can keep at it, he’ll make good progress over time. Think about it. He used to blow all his salary on pokies. And now he’s got money in his pocket to do normal things in life. These $500 can be used to pay rent, reduce credit card debt, foot the bill for repairs around the house. You name it. I mean, you know what I’m on about.

I hope he keeps at it. Because this trend can easily land him $10,000 to $20, 000 richer in a year or two. Now that’s some nice chunk of change sitting around for medical emergencies.

Another Redditor shared a similar line of thought as I:

That is great, I have a few things to say. First is this, if you keep this up you are going to have $3000/$5000 saved pretty fast, you might be tempted to go gamble. Try your best to stay away. If you do have the urge and can’t stop yourself, take $100 or $150 and leave all CC’s and debit cards at home. I am very excited and happy for you, keep us updated.

Second, I come from a a family of gamblers. My sister would blow her entire check in one weekend at the casino. After Covid my dad passed away and she takes care of our Mom, so she basically quit going. She now had $49,700 saved! Actually that was about 6 paychecks ago, so I am sure she is over $50,000. She is very proud of herself, and I am also.

Good for her sister too. Such stories really push me to wake up every day and make an effort to post anti-gambling related content on Casino Visuals.

One can even one-up it, by sealing the deal i.e., self-exclude. This will make sure that even when his gambling desire comes back with a vengeance, chances of him getting trapped again are cornered to a minimum.

Also, I thing I have noticed is that whenever something is going nice for someone, a bunch of jealous people always step in a ruin it for everybody. For example, in this same thread, a few trolls popped-up and posted replies like the one below:

You are just one step away from your big win bruv, why are you stopping now. That 500 with 1 dollar per spins gonna give you 50,000x in the right slots ez

It’s not just this, there are a few more like these on the same page. I don’t know if these people are serious or just being funny – which it isn’t, from any angle.

Breaking free from self-destructing activities is not easy. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things in life. It’s like quitting drugs. And anyone who’s been on them knows fully well that talking about quitting on a daily basis, and actually going forward with it are two difference concepts that are world’s apart.

I would urge you to go through each and read these stories. If you’re suffering from severe gambling issues, find yourself losing your wages at the end of the week, may be these different stories will give you a direction. I will keep writing more for sure every week. This a war I’ll be personally involved with for a long time to come.
